Prophecies for Watchman: Quotes From C S Lewis' Mere Christianity

“If anyone thinks that Christians regard unchastely as the supreme vice, he is quite wrong. The sins of the flesh are bad, but they are the least bad of all sins. All the worst pleasures are purely spiritual: the pleasure of putting other people in the wrong, of bossing and patronizing and spoiling sport, and back-biting, the pleasures of power, of hatred. For there are two things inside me, competing with the human self which I must try to become. They are the Animal self, and the Diabolical self. The Diabolical self is the worse of the two. That is why a cold, self righteous prig who goes regularly to church may be far nearer to hell than a prostitute. But, of course, it is better to be neither.”

“According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride… it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind.”

“As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”

“For Pride is spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, or contentment, or even common sense.”

“If you think you are not conceited, it means you are very conceited indeed.”

Hit the nail right on its head. Well done. Great quotes.

It has come down to this - a liberal Christian from the grave, rebuking the "Reformed par-excellence"

Oooi you Anonymous, don't call Chew a toon OK? A toon usually has one face for the audience, but Chew is capable of more. So don't underestimate Chew like this. I respect his abilities to adapt to his surroundings so as to appear more religious.

Come on, Paul, I'm not callin Chew a toon, except that a toon might be misunderstood as a Chew. Chew, with his seminary student status, will definitely out-qualify a toon anytime. seminary student sure get glorified when he forces himself upon a church, like, "hey, I'm MDiv, you bunch of church MEMBERS better recognize my QUALIFUCATIONS, or else I'll qualify you as reprobates, eh! Ordain me now!"

Dear protestantpope,

It is discerning of you to identify Mr Chew as a "nail." I have long suspected that due to his resemblance to a standard woodwork 'brad', which are small, thin nails that are typically used for tacking jobs e.g. connecting thin plywood to the back of a cabinet.

Even our Lord Jesus would have used a nail in woodwork, but I doubt Mr Chew would come in useful as a brad-y "nail".

Yes, Mr Ho and PP, you both hit that NAIL right on his head! Can someone repeat that nail hitting act?

I'd rather listen to Lewis anytime.

With Chew's "praxis", who would find his "theology" convincing? His pet salamander, maybe.

Question: Is Chew driven "away" (from Christ?) by his "purpose" to earn some respect from men?
